Italian Stefano Unterthiner is an award-winning nature photographer passionate about wildlife and involved in the conservation of nature. His work is featured internationally in magazines such as National Geographic, GEO, BBC Wildlife, Terre Sauvage, Animan and Airone.

In the wild

"In my work I try to make friends with my subjects. I want to show their real character and create a positive emotion for the viewer to feel," said Stefano.

To capture his subjects in this way, Stefano lives in their environment for long periods of time.

For his recent story on European brown bears, he spent several months in the wild in Finland. For his black macaque photographs on Indonesia's Sulawesi island, he spent six weeks following a group until they would recognise and accept him. Two of his portraits from this trip won him the coveted Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.

Drive and determination

Remembering another project in the South Antarctic, Stefano said: "It was a true expedition. I spent five months there photographing king penguins and wandering albatrosses everyday. It was a surreal but amazing experience. I lived in a small scientific base, the closest hospital was a week's boat ride away and I was only able to phone home once."

Reliable technology

Stefano shoots all of his work using Nikon D3 and D3S cameras; securing the digital captures with his G-RAID Mini on location and G-SAFE in the studio.

"The thought of losing my images? Thankfully it can never happen thanks to G-Tech! We invest in expensive cameras and lenses, but choosing the best external drive is actually even more important, which is why I use the G-Tech," said Stefano.

Stefano continues to travel the world in search of new subjects for his photographic stories. "You have to apply the time and never give up - always go that extra mile. The times when you're tired and cold… this makes me want to go further and it's usually then when I get my best shot."
