I heard that a fellow photographer was an GB international fencer and thought about how I could photograph him in his kit. I didn't want to go for the classic shot - two slightly blurred fencers against a black background. Instead, I wanted something static and much more powerful as an image. Something that shows how intimidating fencers actually look. Since we're both really busy it took literally months for us to find a time when we were both available. That day finally came, and it turned out to be absolutely boiling and to top it off the studio air conditioning wasn't working. This meant I had to work fast to get the shot because the protective clothing fencers wear isn't the coolest, although it looks very cool in photos.
